A conversation with my 12 year old daughter:
Me: Why aren’t you wearing your Crocs anymore?
Her: They aren’t cool.
Me: Why? I love mine.
Her: Hello! The teachers are wearing them now! When the teachers start wearing them, they aren’t cool any more.
HA!
We had this conversation last Spring and I was thinking about it the other day. Do students think about some technologies the same way they think of their “outdated”footwear? Once the teachers start using it, they move to something else….
Just wondering…

Very interesting observation and possibly some truth in it. I wonder if that applies to all technology such as the Wii which is popular here among students and teachers alike – but it is early days yet

Thanks for the comment Patricia. The Wii has been popular here as well. Our Physical Education Mentor has been taking a Wii around to schools to use in Phys. Ed classes.
The students love it, but you’re right, it is in its early days!
As a high school teacher in BC who is in the throes of learning how to involve my students in web 2.0, and has a daughter who will be attending the SAME high school in the fall, I absolutely love your perspective on ‘teachers are using it’. I am about to research the difference between teacher-directed web interactions and student-directed ones. I’m presenting to my Simon Fraser University cohort in a couple of weeks and would love to use your anecdote…may I?
Hi Pam,
Nice to hear from you. Your research sounds very interesting and I would love to learn more about your findings. Feel free to use the anecdote in your presentation.
Have a great year!
